Utviklingen i skolen har de siste tiårene dreid fra en lærerstyrt undervisnings- og vurderingskultur til en situasjon der eleven, med læreren som veileder, har en aktiv rolle i egen læring.

De tre fagovergripende temaene, folkehelse og livsmestring, demokrati og medborgerskap og bærekraftig utvikling, møter elevene i alle fag. De skal lære hvordan de kan ta vare på seg selv, hvordan de kan være aktive medborgere i samfunnet og hvordan de kan ta vare på kloden vår.
